How can the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history be unknown to most Americans? It is surprising to me, but few people recognize the name Sultana, a riverboat that exploded on the Mississippi River April 27, 1865 killing as many as 1800 people. This is more lives lost than those on the Titanic. It is a story that should not be lost and the subject of my new book River of Fire. Through 3 fictional characters based on real people involved in the tragedy, the story takes you on the final voyage of the Sultana. Experience the night of a River of Fire.
